Tune DB Performance With VROOM

© 2005 MerrittLabs

Accessing information from the database server’s memory is often much faster than reading it from disk storage. By showing you how memory usage can be improved in your databases, VROOM can often help your databases perform better on existing hardware.

This module allows you to examine the efficiency with which the database is able to reuse data and structural information that has been cached in the host server’s memory.  This memory performance information can complement the physical performance info available from other VROOM modules.

For databases running Oracle 9i or later, VROOM also can make recommendations about the appropriate sizing of memory structures. The graph below shows how changing the size of the different block buffer caches in memory can affect the database’s need to repeatedly read data from disk.  Since reading data from memory is generally faster than reading it from disk, this can lead to performance improvements. The graph also shows how overallocating memory beyond certain levels may not provide additional benefits. Along with other analyses of memory performance provided by VROOM,  this can help you determine the most cost-effective use of server resources.
